CHAPTER TWENTY FIVE

CORNERED

I looked at her with pleading eyes. I didn’t want this. I wasn’t the kind of person that I used to be. I wasn’t that scared, tired, angry young woman who turned on her family with a knife. I was happy here in Thompsonville. I was loved.

“You will crawl on your knees through this forest to beg me for this in the end.”

“I will rather go to jail,” I said.

She threw her head back in wild laughter. “Do you think I can’t get to you there? Do you think that mere walls can keep me out?”

I looked down at Joe’s face, his eyes pleaded for mercy.

“He is not an innocent man, Dorothy,” the witch said, sweeping her finger through some of his blood, and holding it out to me. “Here, take a taste of his blood, and you will know that he deserves death.”

I leaned forward, licking at the blood. The next moment I was on my back, all the air knocked out of me. Inside my head, flashes of memory assailed my mind. Joe’s memories. His hands around a woman’s neck, forcing himself into her house, into her bedroom, into her body. His granting as he pushed and shoved his way into one woman after another, raping them, and leaving them death when he was satisfied. One, two, three, ten, twenty... so many women that I lost count.

A strong wind began to blow, circling the room and pulling every loose object into its spiral. I felt it pull at me. My body, weak and tired, couldn’t resist the pull and before long, despite the fact that I fought, I was standing next to Joe and the witch. She had a knife in her hands.

She made a small cut in her wrist, from which dark red blood immediately began to run. She placed the knife into my right hand. I looked down at it in a stupor. It had a slim blade, formed in the ‘s’ shape of a snake in motion. The hilt, intricately engraved with leaves and flowers, reflected the light from the candles in broken speckles across the room. In the centres of the flowers were gemstones in red, yellow and deep amber. It was a beautiful knife, and light as a feather. I closed my hand around the hilt and felt a deep vibration pulsing from it into my skin, then my fingers, my wrists, arms, shoulders... all the way through every cell within me.

“Now,” she said, pushing me forward. “What you want to do it to sit down on his chest, but don’t smother him. He has to bleed to death, not suffocate.”

I nodded, feeling like a zombie.

The books slid over the floor to settle at his shoulders. The one was the book on insects, rodents and reptiles. It opened on a page with a spider that looked like a tarantula. The body was as big as my hand. The entire spider, covered with long black hair, trembled in front of my eyes. I shuddered.
